๐ฟ๐ Wildlife Wednesday: Celebrating Staffordshire Day at Trentham! ๐ฟ๐
At Trentham, we are deeply committed to the conservation of nature and have cultivated an environment where diverse plant and animal life can thrive - both big and small! ๐ณโ๏ธ
With the warmer weather now here, some of our more elusive and larger invertebrate (mini-beasts) species are starting to emerge, including the Eurasian Hornet (Vespa crabro). This is the UK`s largest species of wasp and not to be confused with the invasive Asian Hornet. Have you seen one yet? ๐๐
Hornets, while large and rather intimidating, are far less aggressive than other wasp species and generally if left alone, will not both people. Bigger than other species of wasp, the usual yellow and black stripes are replaced by a yellow and burgundy/brown colour scheme.
Hornets are important and under valued pollinators. Trentham is home to wide variety of important pollinating species including Eurasian Hornets, and it`s been incredible to see them buzzing around in our flowerbeds this week.
